I've often teased Gary about his sailing abilities since I've never seen his boat leave the dock so was pleasantly surprised when he announced that he was going sailing. Yesterday Captain Gary and Bill (navigator - forgot his GPS; quartermaster - forgot the ice; galley slave - talents untested on this trip) attempted to sail to the Berry Islands. They spent the day making preparations: inspecting and installing the sails, stowing provisions, etc etc. At 22:52 they unplugged the shore power, cut the cable TV, cast off the lines and motored down the canal, off for their great adventure.

You may have noticed I said attempted and that Bill's talents in the galley were untested (but I've heard he's quite the chef). As luck would have it the engine was not in prime working order. They had no trouble in the canal but once they were out in the ocean their speed dropped to under 2 knots and I'm sure the wind was also not cooperating. They were forced to turn back. They had invited us along but I told them I was doing them a favour by not going and jeopardizing the trip, as ill winds seem to pop up when I'm on the water. Maybe just inviting me had put a curse on the venture.
It's truly unfortunate, I know how much they were looking forward to going as neither one have been to the Berry Islands - such is sailing.
